Diabetes is a leading cause for blindness and kidney failure. It also dramatically raises the risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Unfortunately, most people don’t notice the most common symptoms of the disease until it’s too late.

Diabetes is separated into two groups, depending on how your body is producing and utilizing the insulin hormone.

Type 1 Diabetes

Total lack of insulin production.

Type 1 diabetes is the result of your immune system attacking and destroying the cells that produces insulin. Eventually these cells will be destroyed and all insulin production will be stopped. This effects how you absorb sugar and directly influences your daily energy.

Type 2 Diabetes

Too little insulin is produced, or you aren’t using insulin effectively.

Type 2 diabetes can develop at any age, but is most obvious once you reach adulthood. Type 2 is far more common than type 1, with 90-95% of all people with diabetes having insulin deficiency. Type 2 is the result of insulin resistance, where you aren’t utilizing insulin effectively.

Type 1 Symptoms

– Unexpected weight loss. A lack of insulin disrupts how your body uses the energy it gets from food. If you’re unable to utilize your energy calories consumed, your body will begin to break down muscle tissue and fat for energy. This results in weight loss, even if you haven’t changed the way you eat or exercise.

– Vomiting and nausea. When your body burns fat for energy it releases ketones. This is very normal, and for most people it doesn’t cause problems. Someone with diabetes will burn abnormally high levels of fat, releasing dangerous levels of ketones. Excessive ketones in your blood can make you feel sick and nauseous.

Getting tested for diabetes at the doctor’s office is relatively quick and easy, and can prevent long term health complications. Your immune system can’t cure the disease on its own, and your condition will get progressively worse if it goes untreated.
